The Golf's always had its performance-oriented big brother, the GTI, and occasionally, the all-wheel drive V6-powered Golf R32 has appeared in the US. In 2012, Volkswagen brought a high-performance Golf to market calling it simply the "Golf R." It comes with a direct-injected turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder and all-wheel drive system borrowed from the Audi TTS. The engine is tuned for 256 horsepower and 243 lb-feet of torque for the Golf. A 6-speed manual transmission is the only gearbox option. Styled like a conventional Golf, the R distinguishes itself by small 'R' badges, center split-exhaust, a rear lip spoiler and large front intakes. It comes in both 3- and 5-door versions for those who need some practicality with their performance. Standard equipment for the Golf R includes 18-inch alloy wheels, xenon HID headlamps, heated power mirrors with integrated turn signals. Standard entertainment consists of a touch-screen stereo with MP3 playback, Bluetooth, an auxiliary audio input, satellite radio and 8 speakers. The interior comes with leather heated seats, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, keyless entry, automatic climate control and power windows and locks. Safety features include standard anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, dual front airbags and both side-impact thorax and curtain airbags. The options list is short, but Volkswagen will add a power sunroof, a high-performance Dynaudio sound system, keyless access and a navigation system on request.
